At a Glance: The Local Roots Mission

  • Who we are: South Africa’s premier subscription service for small-batch, artisan snacks.

  • The Founders: Viroshan (Durban) and Daniel (Pretoria)—two high school friends on a mission to uncover hidden culinary gems.

  • The Problem: Supermarket snacks lack soul, story, and transparency.

  • The Solution: A curated monthly box that bridges the gap between local makers and discerning snackers.

The Supermarket Fatigue

It started with a text message.

I was standing in the snack aisle of a major retailer in Durban, staring at a wall of biscuits. There were fifty options, but they all looked the same. Same plastic packaging. Same preservatives. Same multinational logos disguised as “home-baked.”

I took a photo and sent it to my best friend (and now co-founder) in Pretoria. “Does food even have a taste anymore, or just a brand?”

His reply came through a few hours later. He had spent his Saturday morning at a local farmer’s market in Pretoria. He sent back a photo of a jar of raw honey, dark as molasses, held by the beekeeper who harvested it that morning.

“The taste is still there,” he wrote. “You just won’t find it in Aisle 4.”

That was the spark. We realized that while South Africa’s culinary heritage is rich, diverse, and world-class, the best of it is hidden. It’s tucked away in the Shongweni valleys, the Pretoria bushveld, and the Cape winelands.

We founded Local Roots to break down the walls of the supermarket and bring the market directly to your door.

The “Local Roots” Standard: What Defines Artisan?

In a world where everything is labeled “premium,” the word has lost its meaning. For us, “Local” isn’t just a geography; it’s a methodology.

When we scout for our monthly boxes, we aren’t looking for suppliers; we are looking for Makers. Here is the criteria every item must meet before it earns a spot in your box:

-Small Batch Production: We prioritize makers who produce in limited runs. This ensures attention to detail that mass production lines simply cannot replicate.

-Transparent Sourcing: We want to know where the ingredients come from. If it’s honey, where do the bees forage? If it’s biltong, how was it cured?

-No “Soulless” Fillers: If the ingredient list looks like a science experiment, it stays on the shelf. We look for clean, honest ingredients.

-A Story Worth Telling: Every product in a Local Roots box comes with a narrative. Who made this? Why did they start? What is their heritage?

Durban Heat vs. Pretoria Classics

Local Roots is a tale of two cities.

I run operations from Durban (KZN), a region known for its intense flavors, humidity, spices, and lush Midlands produce. My co-founder operates from Pretoria (Gauteng), the heartland of classic South African staples—think perfect rusks, robust biltong, and hearty bushveld flavors.

This geographical spread gives us a unique advantage. We don’t just source from one bubble. We constantly challenge each other.

  • “Is this KZN chili sauce too hot for the average palate?”

  • “Is this Pretoria droëwors dry enough?”

The result is a monthly box that represents a true cross-section of South African excellence. We fight about the flavors so you don’t have to guess.

Why “Coming Soon” is Worth the Wait

We are currently gearing up for our Debut Launch in April 2026.

We could have launched sooner. We could have filled a box with wholesale snacks from a distributor and slapped our logo on it. But that would violate the very promise we made to ourselves.

We are currently spending our weekends at markets—from the misty mornings at Shongweni to the bustling stalls of the Hazel Food Market—tasting, testing, and shaking hands. We are building relationships with makers who have never sold online before.

We are building the supply chain that South Africa deserves.
