The Hunt for the Perfect Bite

Supermarkets are convenient, but they are boring. If you want to taste the real South Africa—the one that tastes like braai smoke, fresh honeycomb, and malay spices—you have to go to the source.

At Local Roots, our job is literally to hunt down the best food in the country. Viroshan covers the humid valleys of KZN, and Daniel scours the highveld of Gauteng. But we also have our eyes on the Cape and beyond.

If you are planning a foodie road trip in 2026, these are the 5 markets that need to be on your GPS.

1. The Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market (KZN)

  • Where: Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal.

  • When: Saturdays, 6:30 AM – 12:30 PM

  • Vibe: Misty Valleys & Waterfalls.

This is Viroshan’s “Home Base”. Located in the lush Valley of 1000 Hills, Shongweni is arguably the most atmospheric market in the country. It often starts with mist rolling off the waterfall and ends with sunny picnics.

  • What to eat: Look for the famous artisan cheese stands, the craft gin tasting boards, and the spicy Durban curries that wake you up faster than the coffee.

  • Local Roots Scout Tip: Keep an eye out for the small-batch chili sauces made by local farmers—they pack a punch you won’t find in a bottle store.

2. Pretoria Boermaak (Gauteng)

  • Where: Silverton, Pretoria.

  • When: Saturdays, 5:30 AM – 9:30 AM

  • Vibe: Authentic, Early Bird, Traditional.

This is Daniel’s stomping ground. It is unapologetically old-school. If you want a cappuccino with almond milk and a cronut, go somewhere else. If you want the best raw meat, vetkoek, and boerewors in the hemisphere, you come here.

  • What to eat: The vetkoek and mince is legendary. Also, look for the “Tannies” selling homemade jams and preserves—these are often family recipes passed down for generations.

  • Local Roots Scout Tip: This is where we source the “heart” of our boxes. The rusks and droëwors found here set the standard for the rest of the country.

3. Oranjezicht City Farm Market (Cape Town)

  • Where: V&A Waterfront, Cape Town.

  • When: Sat/Sun Mornings & Wednesday Nights

  • Vibe: Chic, Coastal, Organic.

You can’t talk about South African food without mentioning the Mother City. Oranjezicht is the gold standard for “Farm to Table” chic. It’s where the ocean meets the orchard.

  • What to eat: The fresh produce here is vibrant enough to be art. Look for artisanal sourdough, fynbos-infused honey, and ethically sourced charcuterie.

  • Local Roots Scout Tip: The Western Cape excels at fruit preserves and delicate confectioneries (nougat/fudge). We monitor this market closely to bring that “Cape Coastal” flair to our boxes.

4. Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market (Garden Route)

  • Where: Sedgefield (Between Wilderness and Knysna)

  • When: Saturday Mornings

  • Vibe: Rustic, Forest, Community.

If you are driving the Garden Route, this is a non-negotiable stop. It has been running for over 20 years and enforces a strict “Locals Only” rule—sellers must live in the area.

  • What to eat: The breakfast pitas and locally cured olives are staples. It feels like a time capsule of how markets used to be—slow, friendly, and deeply connected to the land.

5. Hazel Food Market (Gauteng)

  • Where: Menlo Park, Pretoria.

  • When: Saturdays, 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

  • Vibe: International, Buzzing, Lunch Spot.

While the Boermaak is for the early risers buying groceries, Hazel is for the “Long Lunch” crowd. It’s a melting pot of cultures, featuring food stalls ranging from Dutch croquettes to Argentinean steak.

  • What to eat: Come hungry and graze. It’s a testing ground for new food concepts and trendy snacks before they hit the mainstream.

Can’t Drive to All 5?

We get it. Driving from the Shongweni mist to the Pretoria dust in one weekend is impossible.

That’s why we created Local Roots.

We do the traveling, the tasting, and the negotiating so you don’t have to. Every month, we pack the best discoveries from these regions into one box and courier it to your door.
